Caring for Hand-Dyed Yarns: A Guide from Campfiber Yarns

Hi there! I’m Lora Camp, the dyer behind Campfiber Yarns, and I pour my heart into every skein I create.

Hand-dyed yarns are a labor of love—each one is unique, vibrant, and crafted to inspire your creativity. Taking proper care of your hand-dyed yarn ensures that your projects remain beautiful for years to come.

Today, I’m sharing my tips for caring for hand-dyed yarns, so you can enjoy their beauty and longevity for many years to come!

Why Hand-Dyed Yarns Need Special Care

Unlike mass-produced yarns, hand-dyed yarns are made in small batches, with artisanal techniques and premium dyes. While these dyes create gorgeous, rich colors, they may be more delicate than commercial options. Proper care ensures the fibers stay soft, the colors remain vibrant, and your projects look stunning over time.

Before You Start Your Project

  1. Check for Colorfastness
While I use high-quality, professional dyes, some colors—especially deep, saturated tones especially in the red family—may bleed slightly during the first wash. To be safe:

    • Fill a basin with cool water and a touch of wool-friendly detergent.
    • Gently soak a small swatch or strand of the yarn for a few minutes.
    • If you notice any dye bleeding, don’t worry! A vinegar rinse (1 tablespoon of white vinegar per quart of water) can help set the color.

  2. Alternate Skeins for Consistency
Because each skein is unique, slight color variations are part of the charm of hand-dyed yarns. For larger projects like sweaters or blankets, I recommend alternating skeins every few rows. This blends any differences and creates a more cohesive look.

During Your Project

Handle Gently

Hand-dyed yarns are delicate, so treat them kindly as you work. Avoid tugging or pulling too hard, and keep them away from rough surfaces or zippers that might snag the fibers.

Keep Yarn Clean

Store your skeins and projects in a clean, dry space away from dust, pet hair, or spills. Yarn bags or breathable storage bins are great for keeping your precious yarn safe.

Washing Your Finished Projects

Hand Wash Only

Hand-dyed yarns (both Superwash and Non-Superwash) thrive with gentle care. If you are looking for a wool-safe detergent, I have carry some SOAK Wool Wash in many gorgeous scents.

Follow these steps:

  • Fill a basin with cool water and a wool-safe detergent.
  • Submerge your project, gently swishing it around without agitating or wringing it.
  • Let it soak for 10–15 minutes.
Rinse Carefully - if required
  • Some wool-wash products do not require rinsing. Follow directions that are suggested with your product.
  • Rinse your project in cool water until the soap is gone. Avoid using hot water, as it can cause felting or bleeding in some fibers.

Dry Flat

Gently press out excess water using a clean towel. Lay your project flat on another towel or blocking mats to dry, reshaping it as needed. Keep it away from direct sunlight or heat, which can fade colors over time.

Storage Tips

  • Keep Away from Light
Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can fade vibrant hand-dyed colors. Store your projects in a cool, dark place when not in use.

  • Protect from Pests
Natural fibers can attract moths, especially in certain climates. Consider adding cedar blocks or lavender sachets to your storage area to deter pests.
